The U-17 and U-15 San Jose Earthquakes Academy teams will begin the second and final round of Generation adidas Cup qualifying from Feb. 14-17 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. Following GA Cup group play, some of the world’s top international clubs will be added to the competition.
With three matches remaining in group play, the U-17 and U-15 Quakes will continue to compete against their respective Group B opponents including: Chicago Fire FC, LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders FC, Minnesota United FC and Sporting Kansas City.
U-17 Quakes | Currently third
For the U-17 age group, 25 Major League Soccer Academies will compete in group play for placement into three different divisions that will feature international clubs. The top two teams in each group will advance to Division 1, the third and fourth place teams will be placed into Division 2 and the remaining teams will be placed into Division 3. The Quakes currently sit third in their group with three games left to play. In order to advance to Division 1, the Quakes will need favorable results against Chicago Fire FC (first place), hosts LA Galaxy (second place) and Minnesota United FC (fifth place).
U-15 Quakes | Currently second
For the U-15s, the journey past the group stage is much more difficult. Only the four group winners will advance to the MLS-Liga MX International Challenge in Frisco, Texas.
The U-15 Quakes are tied in overall points with Seattle Sounders FC (first place) and Sporting Kansas City (third place) with only goal differential to separate them.
Even with a slightly better standing than the U-17 Quakes, their journey will be just as challenging. The Quakes will need to win all three of their matches for the best possible chance of advancing past the group stage.
