When did you first become Quakes fans?

  • Rob: 2002 was when we first started attending games. 2003 was the first year we got season tickets. We were rewarded by actually being able to go down to LA and actually see that cup won. That was really exciting. We were going to a handful of games after the world cup in 2002.

What has been your favorite memory as a Quake’s fan?

  • Rob: The most exciting one that is really hard to beat, was the 5-4 win, on the way to that 2003 championship. We brought my mom’s cousin's exchange student from Barcelona. It was the only soccer game he went to when he came here but he probably had sent me over a dozen emails when he went back the next year asking how his Quakes were doing.
  • Sarah: Well definitely a memorable moment was the groundbreaking for the new stadium with the world record being set and either the same day or next day when the giant front loader slammed against the ground to create an earthquake. So I guess the excitement surrounding the building of the new stadium and finally getting it going.
  • Rob: We have front row upper deck tickets at PayPal. So we were getting rained on pretty hard for Wondo’s four goals. We were right there for the tie and the winning goal. There was nobody there, it was half the stadium cause it was freezing and it was just a great day.

Who is your favorite Quakes player?

  • Sarah: Not to just say Wondo, I always really liked Dwayne De Rasario
  • Rob: I've got to agree with those and you know he doesn’t get a lot of call out but I would put Ramiro Coralez. Waiting for the quakes to come back to the US and being the first signing for us was a huge deal.

When you heard you were nominated , what was your first response,

  • Sarah: We were first nominated last season, but we were really bummed because it was the one game we couldn’t go to. But we were pretty thrilled it could be pushed forward to this season. It feels like a huge honor especially after spending so many years communicating into games and the. rob being the person who came up with the heritage cup. It is really gratifying and I’m really looking forward to it.
  • Rob: I’ve got to agree with all of that. It’s not normal for fans to get such input as we have had with our club over the years so it’s interesting. It’s a really gratifying and amazing moment, it’s a relationship. It’s not just some award, it's a collaboration. It’s pretty awesome.

Can you give us some background on the heritage cup?

  • Rob: Yea so I was standing with Don at one of the tailgates when it was first announced that Seattle was coming in. I had an idea of this NASL ball and we kinda knew what we wanted it to look like so we talked about it. Then he called me the next day saying he loved my idea and they were giving $5k for it. It’s not often as an artist you are involved with a club and charitable organization that works with that club and actually wants you to do things with them. That was just awesome. But it’s created a really great rivalry with Seattle.
  • Rob: We put together those rules every year but the best thing that ever came out of that cup was being able to bring it to that 35th year reunion. It was really cool to connect the past more tangibly to the present

What keeps you guys coming and continuing to be such loyal fans from such a far distance like Modesto ?

  • Rob: That’s a tough one, there are so many ways to answer that. I was born in the South Bay and for me this is such an incredible connection. So it’s one way I have kept in touch with my roots. One great thing about the earthquake's fans is that it feels intimate and family-like in a way that other supporter groups don’t. There is something more intimate about the experience that is really exciting.
  • Sarah: I would agree with that. It has always felt like a community. Even from the first time we started regularly coming to games, the people around us were friendly. Everywhere we have been it sort of has become this little community. We see the same people combining into games and it starts to feel like a little family in your section.
  • Rob: The people in the front office too are amazing. Someone of Jed’s stature comes over and says hi it's just nice to see them connect with the community.
  • Sarah: And honestly one more thing I have to say, having our stadium at PayPal and the manifestation of it is amazing. Every time I come there I’m like this our stadium and our stadium is amazing and it’s the best by far.
