The Quakes had a big year on and off the field, but nothing the team did had a bigger impact on the community than its efforts with disaster relief.
During the early part of the calendar year, the City of San Jose experienced its worst flood in 100 years as 14,000 families were ordered to evacuate from their homes. The Earthquakes set up a fundraiser and pooled $40,000, with the Quakes contributing $15,170, the general public contributing $14,830 and the Oakland A’s adding $10,000. The Earthquakes also donated time and goods, as jackets and other necessities were brought to shelters.
In October, the Quakes, along with the other professional sports teams in the Bay Area, united to donate $450,000 towards fire relief efforts in the North Bay. The fires burned more than 100,000 acres, consuming many homes and whole neighborhoods in the process.
In addition, the Quakes Foundation donated money towards relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey, the flood in Puerto Rico and the earthquake in Mexico.
