Last Game vs. LA Galaxy
Earthquakes 1, LA Galaxy 1; Sept. 14, 2014; Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Chris Wondolowski scored his 13th goal of the season to rally the San Jose Earthquakes to a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy in front of a sold out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Earthquakes came alive in the second half after entering the locker room trailing 1-0 thanks to an Omar Gonzalez header in the 28th minute. Wondolowski continued his hot post-World Cup form, slotting home his eighth goal since his time with the United States Men’s National Team to earn San Jose a point at home. Gonzalez took advantage of his height to open the scoring on a corner kick midway through the first half. Stefan Ishizaki sent the cross in and Gonzalez snapped his header toward the turf. The ball bounced quickly in the six-yard box and into the top netting, lifting the visitors to an early one-goal advantage. San Jose’s best chance in the first half came in the 33rd minute after a dangerous service from Shea Salinas. Darting toward the endline, Salinas played a threatening ball toward Jordan Stewart’s blistering run into the box. Backtracking on the play, Gonzalez was forced to redirect the service, which almost bounced in for an own goal at the back post. The Galaxy had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 36th minute after winning a penalty kick. Robbie Keane stepped up for the spot kick and hit the crossbar, denying his side a 2-0 lead. San Jose would even the score in the 66th minute after a back-post finish from Chris Wondolowski. Jordan Stewart one-timed an attempted LA Galaxy clearance near the edge of the box, finding Wondolowski’s right foot and then the top netting. The assist was Stewart’s first as an MLS player.
